Hey Reader, it's Nick here.
I love science. It’s the foundation of everything I coach.
But here’s something most people forget...
Science doesn’t give you the answer — it gives you a starting point.
And if you blindly follow “what the research says,” you might be ignoring the most important data of all: your own.
Let me show you two of the biggest issues with science — and how to actually use it to your advantage.
The Sample Size Problem
Imagine this: A new pill is tested on 1,000 people (which is actually a large sample).
The results show it “works” — on average.
But within that group:
Some people respond extremely well
Others see no change
A few actually get worse
Science reports the average — not the full range.
So if you’re one of the outliers (and many of us are), following that advice might not help you at all. It might even backfire.
Yet we keep generalizing results from small groups to entire populations.
The Funding Problem
In 2015, NYU professor Marion Nestle tracked 168 nutrition studies. Of those, 156 were funded by food companies — and all 156 showed favorable results for the sponsor.
That’s not science. That’s marketing in a lab coat.
So next time you see a study claiming “X is proven to help Y”… ask yourself: Who paid for this research?
The answer might reveal a hidden bias.
So…
Can We Still Trust Science?
Yes — but with a caveat.
Science gives us direction, not a destination.
What separates high performers from everyone else isn’t that they read more studies…
It’s that they test, track, and tweak.
They become their own science experiments.
They ask:
Is this working for me?
Can I improve this further?
What does my data say?
That’s the difference between good and great.
Between guessing and optimizing.
Between staying stuck… and breaking through.
You have more power than any study will ever tell you.
Stay sharp,
Nicklas
PS: If you’re ready to stop guessing and start testing, I’ve built a complete, science-backed system to help you crush your 5K — but more importantly, it teaches you how to listen to your own data through testing. Check it out here.
