Back when I was doing triathlon there were 2 kinds of people.

Those who would train insane amounts of distance and those who would train less but with higher intensity.

So who got better?

Well this is where I see most people go wrong actually.

Because they hear that to become a better runner you need to increase your volume over time.

And the more volume the better the runner...

So they start to run longer.

But here’s the problem.

Volume is not just distance.

Volume is distance x intensity.

So back to the two types of triathletes.

It wasn’t the ones who could handle more intensity or more distance that got the best results.

It was those who can handle the most volume over time.

Meaning those who could train the longest and the hardest for the longest period of time.

You see, the boring truth is that it's not whether you should train harder or longer.

It's how do you add the most amount of volume.

The more volume you can handle over time, the better you become.

Not next week. Not next month. But over years.

So how do we do this?

We could increase distance, pace, or frequency or we could reduce the rest times between workouts.

Your body will adapt to what you throw at it, so we need to constantly push it to keep improving.

And that's how over years you can go from barely being able to run a 5k, to doing a half ironman every Sunday without even giving it a second thought.

So the real question isn’t “should I train harder or longer?”

It’s: How much quality volume can I handle this year?
