The rule of thumb in running is that for every 1kg you lose, you can expect to run 1 second per km faster.

So... How Much Does Weight ACTUALLY Matter?

Studies have shown that supporting your bodyweight uses about 74% of your running energy.

And if you look at elite marathoners, they're a lot leaner than their 100m sprinter counterparts.

But the scale doesn't tell the full story.

Weight carried in your legs slows you down more than the same weight carried in your trunk.

The reason is something called the lever principle.

It states that the further weight sits from your center of mass, the more energy your muscles burn swinging, lifting, and stabilizing with every stride.

It's why the shoe Sebastian Sawe wore when he broke 2 hours in the Marathon gets so much attention...

It weighed only 97g!

And because weight on the feet matters so much, experts are still debating how much that shoe influenced the London Marathon result...
